Global Mapper Mobile puts data collection in the palm of your hand, making it easy to capture ground control points and other key on-site features while collecting drone imagery for processing in the Pixels to Points tool on the Global Mapper desktop. Available for iOS and Android operating systems, Global Mapper Mobile is a small but robust app designed to enhance field workflows with support for data review, data collection, data editing, and even a few analytical tools.

Global Mapper Mobile, a free app available for download from the App Store and Google Play Store, enables users to begin collecting data using their mobile device’s internal location services. This can be done in a blank map space or with a loaded basemap from an online source. Digitizing vector features in Global Mapper Mobile includes methods for drawing manually on a map, as well as creating points, lines, and area features using GPS. Once added to the map, attributes and images can be added and edited to store additional field information.

To get even more out of Global Mapper Mobile, consider adding the Pro module. An annual subscription for a nominal fee, the Pro module unlocks a range of useful tools for your GIS field work, including advanced GPS connectivity to external GNSS devices, geocoding, quick data analysis tools, and more!

While using the internal location services of mobile devices is convenient, for high-accuracy ground control point data collection, a higher-end external positioning device can be used with Global Mapper Mobile Pro. Once an external GNSS device is connected via Bluetooth or IP port configuration, Global Mapper Mobile will use the position from the external device, even applying RTK correction if it is compatible and configured via the app’s built-in NTRIP client. With each release of Global Mapper Mobile, the list of tested and supported external positioning devices grows. Extending the utility of Global Mapper Mobile in the field, the Pro module includes a small set of analytical tools. These tools include field-of-view analysis, volume calculation, and, in the new 3.0 version of the application, contour generation. Mimicking the versions of these tools found in the Global Mapper Pro desktop software, the mobile version of these tools is optimized for rapid use in the field. Field-of-view analysis, volume calculation, and contour generation rely on the field data layer on the mobile map to provide information and context about the area while working in the field.
