ONDC launches interoperable QR code

SUMMARY

ONDC’s interoperable QR code, currently in alpha phase, allows merchants to generate a unique QR code that customers can scan using a shopper app registered with ONDC

Merchants can display their QR codes anywhere – on storefronts, products, marketing materials or social media

Customers can simply scan the code with any QR code scanning app or the ONDC Buyer app

The Open Digital Commerce Network (ONDC) has launched an interoperable QR code to empower every merchant, from local artisans to neighborhood grocers.

ONDC’s interoperable QR code, which is currently in alpha phase, allows merchants to generate a unique QR code that customers can scan using a shopper’s app registered with ONDC. It is starting with magicpin and Paytm and will be expanded to the entire network soon after initial testing.

“ONDC’s interoperable QR code breaks down the barriers that have held small businesses back. Now every merchant has the ability to reach customers digitally, just like the e-commerce giants. This is a huge step towards an open, inclusive and democratized digital marketplace.”
“Today marks a watershed moment for Indian trade,” said T Koshy, Managing Director and CEO, ONDC.

Merchants can display their QR codes anywhere—on storefronts, products, marketing materials, or social media—allowing them to engage with customers both offline and online. Customers can simply scan the code using any QR scanner app or ONDC Buyer apps like Paytm and magicpin to be directly connected to the merchant’s online store through the buyer’s preferred app.

“This is not just a new feature; it is a catalyst for economic growth and digital inclusion. Millions of businesses will come online, creating new opportunities and driving India’s digital economy,” Koshy added.

Launched in 2021, ONDC is an initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Its aim is to promote open networks for the exchange of goods and services through digital or electronic networks. ONDC is a digital public infrastructure based on a network model, rather than an application or platform.

ONDC is an open-source platform designed to democratize e-commerce in India and bring small businesses online. As a private, non-profit initiative supported by DPIIT, ONDC aims to make e-commerce more accessible across the country. Companies like Delhivery, Paytm, PhonePe, Uber, IDFC Bank, Kotak, Shiprocket, Dunzo, and Tata Neu have integrated their services with ONDC.

The government recently informed Parliament that over 5.7 lakh sellers and service providers are currently operating on the ONDC platform.

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said ONDC has received 71 applications from sellers, 22 applications from buyers and 16 from logistics service providers and there are a total of over 5.7 lakh sellers and service providers operating in the network.
