GEA-4 will include IRESS and LNG

The Department of Energy (DOE) is holding another green energy auction (GEA) in the fourth quarter of this year, this time aimed at including integrated renewable energy and energy storage systems (IRESS).

“DOE is currently working with development partners to explore the project and
“The economic viability of IRESS,” said Undersecretary of Energy Rowena Cristina Guevara.

IRESS is an advanced energy solution that combines renewable energy (RE) technologies with various energy storage systems (ESS). This approach combines renewable sources with storage solutions, including batteries, flywheels and pumped hydropower, to increase energy efficiency and reliability.

By incorporating energy storage, renewable energy plants could manage their operations more efficiently by storing excess energy generated during peak hours and using it during periods of high demand, thereby minimising the need to provide additional grid capacity.

In the coming months, DOE will publish an indicative timeline for GEA-4 activities by issuing a Notice of Auction (NOA).

“By combining renewable energy (RE) and energy storage, IRESS increases the stability and reliability of the energy system, enabling more consistent and efficient energy delivery,” the DOE said.

With the increase in RE caused by GEA, the department is also considering introducing liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology into the upcoming GEA-4. Instead, DOE will oversee a series of studies and simulations to analyze the impact on price, shipping, contracts, energy and capacity.
