Big Lots is closing more than 250 stores nationwide, including 18 in New England.

After announcing plans to close 35 to 40 Big Lots stores nationwide earlier this year, the discount chain has added at least 200 more stores to its list, including more than a dozen in New England.

According to the Big Lots website, at least 18 Big Lots stores will close in New England: five in Massachusetts, eight in Connecticut, two in Maine, one in New Hampshire and two in Vermont.

In May, the company filed a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the first quarter, revealing a number of areas of deterioration in financial results compared to the same period last year.

According to first-quarter filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company’s net sales fell 10.2% from the first quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of this year, representing a decrease of $114.5 million.

The company’s long-term debt increased by $72.2 million from the first quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024 — for a total of $573.8 million in long-term debt.

In June filings, the company said it expected to open three stores and close 35 to 40. But as of Aug. 2, more than 250 stores are set to close, according to the company’s website.

“We experienced declines in comparables and net sales across all of our merchandise categories,” the company said. “Our home products categories … continue to be negatively impacted by macroeconomic pressures that are impacting discretionary spending among our customers.”

Net losses, use of cash in operations and cash and liquidity forecasts raise “significant doubt” about the company’s “ability to continue as a going concern.”

Before its closure, Big Lots had 1,389 locations nationwide, including 23 in Massachusetts.

The company’s documents do not indicate where else stores are being closed, but its website provides information on which locations will be closed.
