Companies ‘could save billions’ by switching to open source software – Tech

Experts say moving to open-source software could save companies billions of rupees and free them from vendor lock-in constraints as it reduces reliance on specific solutions dominated by a handful of tech giants.

“Adopting open source software is a promising path to increasing technological independence,” said Arif Perdana, assistant professor of digital strategy and data science at Monash University Jakarta Post July 25.

Unlike proprietary software, which is licensed and restricted, open source source code is freely available and can be customized to suit specific needs without incurring excessive fees.

“The long-term cost savings can be significant,” Arif emphasized, “primarily due to the elimination of high licensing fees, and companies can avoid the escalating expenses often associated with vendor lock-in as their business grows.”
