Portugal approves major investment in national energy grid

LISBON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — The Portuguese government announced on Friday that it has given the green light to a series of significant investments by Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) aimed at expanding and developing the National Transmission Network (RNT).

The decision, announced in a statement by Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho, underlines the country’s commitment to expanding energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.

REN’s detailed investment plan includes the creation of a grid connection facility in the high-demand area of Sines and work to integrate a photovoltaic power plant into the grid.

In addition, the development of RNT in the north-eastern part of the country will focus on the integration of renewable energy sources and the provision of new very high voltage grid infrastructure.

The Minister stressed the strategic importance of these investments, noting that they constitute a “sign of encouragement” for national and international companies wishing to invest in Portugal.

“We want to encourage companies, both domestic and foreign, to invest in our country and help build a more sustainable future,” she said.

This decision is part of Portugal’s broader energy strategy to support the integration of renewable energy sources and infrastructure development, positioning the country as a leader in sustainable energy solutions in Europe.
