Nevada District Court Judge Denies UFC Settlement With Former Fighters

By MARK ANDERSON, AP Sports Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada district judge on Tuesday rejected a $335 million settlement request in two UFC antitrust lawsuits filed by former fighters, potentially forcing both sides back into negotiations.

Judge Richard Boulware set an Aug. 19 status update for both cases, and a tentative trial date for former MMA fighter Cung Le was set for Oct. 28. An exact trial date will be determined at the conference.

The UFC released a statement saying it disagrees with the decision and is in contact with opposing attorneys “who have expressed a desire to engage in separate settlement discussions.”

Boulware did not provide any explanation for his decision, but an opinion is expected to be issued soon, according to court documents.

A settlement was reached in March.

Two class action lawsuits by former UFC fighters were filed by Le in 2014 and Kajan Johnson in 2021. Several other fighters were also named in the lawsuits.

They claimed that the UFC was trying to act like a monopoly and thereby limit the fighters’ ability to maximize profits.

The UFC statement said the judge’s decision was also detrimental to the athletes who agreed to the settlement.

“(By) taking the unusual step of rejecting the settlement at this preliminary approval stage, the judge is also denying the athletes the right to be heard at this crucial juncture in their case,” the organization said in a statement.

The Martial Arts Association (MMA), headed by one of the athletes’ lawyers, posted on the X portal: “We have a story to tell about the monopolization of MMA.”
