Schools, government offices closed ahead of tropical storm Debby

MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) — School districts and government offices are announcing closures ahead of Tropical Storm Debby. We’ll update this list as new closures are announced. Check back for updates.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY:

Florida State University in Tallahassee will be closed on Monday, August 5, 2024 due to Tropical Storm Debby, which will begin impacting the area Sunday evening. Florida State University (FSUS) schools and The Marine Lab at Turkey Point will also be closed on Monday, August 5, 2024.

The closure will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 4, and will last until 11:00 p.m. ET on Monday, August 5. The university expects to resume normal operations on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Visit alerts.fsu.edu/ for official FSU updates.

GADSDEN COUNTY SCHOOLS:

The Gadsden County School District will be closed on Monday, August 5 due to the Storm Watch status for the county and surrounding areas.

Shelters will be available at Gadsden County High School and West Gadsden Middle School for county residents affected by the tropical storm.

JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOLS:

After meeting with Jefferson County Emergency Management and the Florida Division of Emergency Management regarding the extreme weather conditions approaching our region, Superintendent Tricquet has made the decision to close all Jefferson County school sites on Monday, August 5, 2024. We will provide an update once the storm has passed and we are able to assess the potential damage to our sites.

LEON COUNTY SCHOOLS:

Due to Tropical Storm Debby, Leon County schools will be closed on Monday, August 5, 2024. For any sports practices scheduled for Monday afternoon, the district will contact the athletic directors at noon Monday to make a final decision on whether to continue.

WAKULLA COUNTY COMMISSION BOARD:

Due to possible inclement weather, all Wakulla County BOCC offices will be closed on the morning of Monday, August 5, 2024. The offices will reopen the same day at 12:00 noon.

Please note that this closure is weather dependent and may be updated as conditions are assessed. Please exercise caution and stay tuned for further updates.

WAKULLA COUNTY SCHOOLS:

Wakulla County schools will be closed on Monday, August 5.

In agreement with local Emergency Management following Saturday’s 5:00 PM update, all Wakulla County schools will be closed on Monday, August 5 due to the expected arrival of TS Debby. Current forecasts indicate the storm will strengthen to a hurricane at landfall, potentially here in Wakulla County.

At this time, staff and employees should expect to return to work on Tuesday, August 6, unless damages necessitate additional closures.

We will provide an update once the storm has passed and we can assess the condition of all buildings.
