Solar Power: Tech Glitch Delays Rooftop Solar Installations in Tamil Nadu under PM Scheme | Chennai News

Solar power goes waste because of tech glitch

Chennai: A lack of integration between the web portal of Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE)and that of Tangedco has led to a delay in the installation of rooftop solar systems in Tamil Nadu under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
After the scheme was announced, Tangedco officials said, a total of 68,009 applications were received from the state on the national portal since Feb for subsidy. But, only 15,185 applications reflected on Tangedco’s portal.

Rooftop connections were given to 6,175 of those applicants.
Union govt introduced a unified web portal for interested consumers to install rooftop solar systems and avail themselves of subsidy in Feb. The applications should have been forwarded to respective discoms/states for further process. The subsidies were revised to make rooftop solar more attractive to consumers and feasibility study was waived for applications with upto 10kW.
After the system is installed through empaneled vendors and connection is given by the discom, the Union govt deposits the subsidy directly into the bank accounts of consumers. A lack of integration between Union and state web portals, however, have delayed the processing of applications.
On Friday, MNRE additional secretary Sudeep Jain held a meeting with Tangedco officials and assured that the glitches would be resolved soon. Tangedco officials said at least 3,000 new connections would be effective in a week as soon as the glitch is resolved. “Not just Tamil Nadu, but several other states too face the same problem,” said Tangedco officials.
Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha member P Wilson recently raised a query in the Parliament about the progress of rooftop solar scheme in Tamil Nadu, for which MNRE minister Pralhad Joshi replied that 11.5% of the applications were converted into actual connections and added that it was the responsibility of the respective discom in each state to implement the scheme.
Tangedco set an ambitious target of 25 lakh rooftop connections in a year under the PM solar scheme and instructed each section officer to enrol at least 1,000 applications.
