There are many other online word games out there these days, but I still play the New York Times Wordle game every day. These days, it’s not only an old friend of mine, but it’s also a nice warm-up for Connections, Strands, and the rest. I usually manage to find the answer to Wordle after five tries, but sometimes I get stuck and worry that I might lose my streak. If you ever find yourself in a bind, check out CNET. Our home page always has the answers to Wordle, Connections, and Strands.

Here is today’s answer Connections, and here is the answer Strands. Are you solving NYT Mini Crossword? Here is today’s answer to this question.

Daily Wordle Tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle—from a discussion of the 1,000th word to my list of the best words to start with, a helpful two-step strategy, and news about controversial word changes. I’ve even compiled what I’ve learned from playing the popular online word puzzle game throughout the year. If you’re wondering if you need an actual answer, you can try the clues in one of those stories.

Still need a word to start with? Someone once told me that she simply looks around and picks a five-letter object she sees to use as a word to start with—like COUCH or CHAIR. I usually stick to words to start with that have the most common letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a word to start with, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I’ve read that people use the financial term ROATE, but I prefer to use words that I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether or not the letters you guessed are in the puzzle, and whether they’re in the same place you guessed them. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for a seven-figure sum in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner, allowing her to narrow down 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating a database of answers. It was also convenient that she has a name that refers to “word.”

A Times spokesperson told me that he believes the first Wordle appeared on June 19, 2021, and the newspaper celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15. Spoiler: The 1,000th word was ERUPT. As in, “Daddy’s going to explode if Wordle gets so tough he loses his streak.”
