Quinta Brunson and Stephanie Hsu to Star in Comedy ‘Par For The Course’

Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary School) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything everywhere and at once) are on board to play According to traditiona new comedy film from Universal Pictures, which Brunson will also co-write and produce.

Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, although we’re told it’s based on an original idea by Brunson. She’s co-writing the script with Abbott Elementary School‘sJustin Tan, who will also direct, in his feature debut. Alex McAtee is producing for Point Grey in a first-see deal with Universal, and Brunson will produce for Fifth Chance. Senior vice president of development Erik Baiers and creative director Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

In a statement about the project, Brunson said: “I am thrilled to be working with Point Grey and Universal on According to tradition. This is a comedy close to my heart and who better to do it with than some of the best producers in the business. I’ve known Seth, Evan, James and Alex for some time and I’m thrilled to finally be working on a project together.”

Brunson added that she was “thrilled” to be working with her “longtime comedy partner and collaborator,” Tan, as well as fellow great talent Hsu. The actor-filmmaker continued, “I can’t wait to see what we can do together on screen.”

Seth Rogen, co-founder of Point Grey with Evan Goldberg, said, “We are so excited to be working with Quinta. She is one of the most incredible comedic voices we have right now, and it’s such an honor to be working with her and seeing what she brings to this project.”

Brunson is known for her Emmy and Golden Globe-winning work as creator, co-creator, head writer, executive producer and star of the hit ABC mockumentary Abbott Elementary Schoolwhich returns for a fourth season on October 9. With the Peabody Award-winning show, she made history as the first black woman to receive three Emmy nominations and the second to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. The show recently earned nine Emmy nominations for its third season, and Brunson has been recognized in multiple categories. Brunson’s additional credits include Strange: The Al Yankovic Story and HBO Black Woman Sketch Show.

She is best known for her dual role in the A24 film, for which she received an Oscar nomination. Everything everywhere and at onceHsu was last seen at Universal Scapegoat and the Lionsgate comedy A joy ride. She lent her voice to an animated feature film intended for distribution in the TIFF format Wild Robotwhich will hit theaters on September 27th under Universal, and which is also set to executive produce and star Situatednew comedy series from Peacock.

Writer, co-producer and director Abbott Elementary SchoolTan met Brunson 11 years ago while performing at an open mic night in Westwood. Before they started performing together, they teamed up to launch BuzzFeed’s scripted comedy division, where they created hundreds of viral sketches.

Mot recently released the fourth season of Prime Video Boysbut also Sausage Party: FoodtopiaPoint Grey’s upcoming offering includes a half-hour comedy series about Apple Studiocreated by and starring Rogen; 2D animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Stories for Paramount+; and a theatrical sequel to Paramount’s box office hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhemamong other projects.

Achieving success through Whirlwindswhich has grossed over $274 million worldwide to date, Universal’s schedule for the rest of the year includes a John Woo film that will premiere on Peacock Killer (August 23), horror in a new version Don’t say anything bad (13th of September) Wild Robot (September 27), Pharrell Williams and Lego biopic Piece by piece (October 11) Mean (November 22) and Nosferatu (25th of December).
