August patch for Google Pixel Watch series is now available

Google has just confirmed that the patch will start rolling out in August to all Pixel Watch devices. You should now receive OTA notifications on your wearable. You can also check for them manually in your watch settings.

This isn’t a major update like Wear OS 5. Instead, it’s just a small incremental update that includes “the latest security patches,” so you won’t find a comprehensive changelog for this update. More specifically, compatible devices will receive the August 2024 security patch to protect them from potential vulnerabilities.

August update now available for all Google Pixel Watch devices, introduces security fixes only

All Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4 (Gen 1 and 2) are eligible for the update. Interestingly, Google’s smartwatches aren’t the most up-to-date yet. That honor belongs to the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, which are already running Wear OS 5, Google’s latest version of its wearable operating system. Google may be taking its time polishing Wear OS 5 before a mass rollout to its products in the coming weeks. In any case, the August security patch has build number TWD9.240805.001.A2 on all models.

Regardless, it’s likely that the company wants to deliver all of its next major updates on the same day. This means that Wear OS 5 could arrive alongside the first stable rollout of Android 15. However, this is just speculation, as there’s nothing official about it. In the meantime, there are even rumors circulating suggesting that the Pixel 9 series will launch with Android 14 and then receive Android 15 via a rollout shortly after.

The next Made by Google event will take place on August 13. The company is expected to announce the Pixel Watch 3 series, and it could be looking to make these its first wearables to run Wear OS 5. Unlike previous generations, the Pixel Watch 3 will come in two sizes to appeal to a wider audience that found the Pixel Watch 1 and 2 to be “too small.”
