Port of Leith renewable energy jetty names honours former CEO

Forth Ports is to name its newly built deep-water river quay at the Port of Leith, designed to accommodate the world’s largest offshore wind construction vessels, Charles Hammond Berth, after the company’s former chief executive, who stepped down in June after 23 years at the helm.

The news was announced to staff by his successor, Stuart Wallace, in a company-wide video following a successful sea trial of the berth last week, which saw the arrival of the 88,500-tonne cruise ship Carnival Legend – the largest ship ever to dock at the Port of Leith – in a successful exercise.

Stuart Wallace, Chief Executive of Forth Ports, said: “Since taking on the role of CEO in early July, this has been the easiest decision I have ever made. Charles had a vision to build the infrastructure, first in Dundee and then here in Leith, to meet the needs of the offshore wind sector, ahead of the market. That vision lives on, not only in his name, but also as we create Scotland’s largest renewable energy hub here in Leith, helping Scotland and the UK achieve their net zero ambitions.”

Built to accommodate the world’s largest offshore renewable energy vessels, Leith’s outer quay is due for completion and handover later this month. The quay has a lifting capacity of up to 100 tonnes per square metre (t/m2), supported by 175 acres of adjacent land for associated renewable logistics, storage and production.

Leith will create Scotland’s largest renewable energy hub on a 175-acre site, supporting Scotland’s energy transition plans, strengthening local supply chains, creating new high-quality green jobs and making a significant contribution to the country’s net zero carbon emissions targets.

Leith Renewables Hub will be part of the strategically located Forth Green Freeport tax sites, which aim to reindustrialise central Scotland, generating thousands of high quality green jobs by increasing trade and supporting business development in the Firth of Forth. The new site will be officially opened in the coming months.
