The producers announced the decision on Tuesday, August 6.

Based on an original story by Strange things creators, directors and executive producers Duffer Brothers, as well as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child writer Jack Thorne and Strange things writer and co-executive producer Kate Trefry, Stranger Things: First Shadow has its roots in the mythology and world established in the streaming hit phenomenon.

The story transports viewers to Hawkins, Indiana, just decades before the 1980s-set series begins. Instead, it’s 1959, and Jim Hopper, Jim Hopper (later Byers), and Bob Newby — first portrayed on screen by David Harbour, Winona Ryder, and Sean Astin — are college students themselves, facing a series of everyday challenges.

Their lives are soon turned upside down, well, upside down, when new student Henry Creel arrives. A name that will certainly resonate with Strange things fans. He later becomes the series’ ultimate villain, Vecna (introduced in Season 4 and played by Jamie Campbell Bower).

Henry’s family, according to the synopsis, “finds that starting over isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.”

And returning to the beginning of the story, the synopsis continues: “may hold the key to the end.”
