Bipartisan Resolution Introduced to Block New Dog Import Rules

WASHINGTON, Maine (WAGM) – A new resolution has been introduced that would require the CDC to re-write new regulations regarding dogs crossing the border.

Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) introduced a bipartisan resolution today, August 8, 2024.

The resolution was filed under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), which allows Congress to overturn administrative decisions.

If passed, the CDC would be required to adapt the regulations to the needs of sled dog racing participants, including mushers and race organizers.

According to a press release from Congressman Golden’s office, they are concerned that the new CDC regulations will jeopardize the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races, the internationally renowned sled dog races in Fort Kent.

“Communities suffer when external decision-makers fail to consider the full consequences of their actions” Congressman Golden said, “I am proud of this bipartisan effort to keep the CDC in place and allow for the development of a new, more workable proposal.”

“CDC must relax strict dog import regulations that place an undue burden on Western New York families,” the congresswoman said. Tenney said. “We hope that the introduction of this CRA will force the CDC to reconsider these excessive measures and take an approach that protects public health without creating significant hardship for pet owners.”

Last month, Golden sent a letter to CDC Director Dr. Mana Cohen, emphasizing the negative consequences of the legislation for northern Maine communities. The following week, he and Tenney introduced an amendment to the federal budget that would effectively block the proposal for a year. After advocacy by Golden and others, the CDC agreed to roll back and delay some of the legislation.
