Big Lots plans to close 10 Bay Area stores

A sign is placed outside a Big Lots store on June 7, 2024, in Hercules, Calif. The discount retailer reported first-quarter earnings that missed analysts’ expectations, with net sales of $1.009 billion compared with $1.124 billion a year earlier.

Discount chain Big Lots is closing 75 stores in California, several of which are in the Bay Area.

In June, Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million in the first quarter ended in May. Net sales fell 10% to a total of $1 billion in the first quarter, according to the company’s website.

Chairman and CEO Bruce Thorn admitted that the company’s sales were down.

“While we made significant progress in streamlining our business in the first quarter, we did not achieve our sales targets, primarily due to continued restraint in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly on high-priced discretionary items,” he said.
