President Draupadi Murmu receives East Timor’s highest civilian honour – World News

President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the Grand Collar of the Order of East Timor, the Southeast Asian country’s highest civilian honour, by her counterpart, President Jos Ramos-Horta, on Saturday. The prestigious honour was bestowed on Murmu, 66, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to public service, particularly in the areas of education, social welfare and women’s empowerment, according to a statement from the president’s office.

President Murmu said the prestigious honour symbolised the strong bond of friendship between India and East Timor. Her visit to Dili was the last leg of her three-nation tour, which also included stops in New Zealand and Fiji. Interestingly, the visit is the first-ever presidential trip from India to the young Southeast Asian nation.

Upon arrival in Dili, President Murmu was warmly welcomed at the airport by President Ramos-Horta. The reception was graced by the joyful presence of local children and a ceremonial guard of honour at the Presidential Palace. During her visit, President Murmu participated in comprehensive discussions with President Ramos-Horta aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors.
