Telangana: Khanapura government hospital issues expired medicines to patient

A patient was found to have been given medicine whose validity expired in March 2024 at a government hospital in Telangana’s Nirmal district, officials said on Saturday.

Azar, a resident of Lingapur village in Kadem mandal, was admitted to the Khanapur government hospital on Friday morning after he developed fever. His relatives noticed that the batch of saline given to Azar was expired, which escalated the situation.

Hospital staff were immediately questioned about the matter. The nurse on duty claimed that although the saline was out of date, it was “still effective.” After relatives raised concerns, the batch of saline was immediately replaced.

Video footage of the incident shows Azar lying on one of the many beds undergoing the procedure and talking about his situation.

The incident has enraged the patient’s relatives, who are now pointing to the hospital’s negligence and demanding accountability to ensure other patients do not have to suffer similar treatment.

The hospital staff responded that they were obliged to provide medical care to patients.
