New York Mobile ID Attracts 100,000 Users Since Launch – Oneida Dispatch

NEW YORK — Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than 100,000 New Yorkers have completed the process of registering for the new New York Mobile ID (MiD), a highly secure digital version of a state-issued driver’s license, learner’s permit or ID card on a smartphone. Governor Hochul announced MiD in June.

“We are thrilled that so many New Yorkers have downloaded the Mobile ID app,” Hochul said in a press release. “This tool is a key step in making travel more seamless and getting travelers to their destinations quickly and safely.”

New York Mobile ID is a voluntary product designed for the convenience and security of New Yorkers, available on iOS and Android devices. Anyone with a valid New York State driver’s license, learner’s permit, or non-driver ID card can download the secure Mobile ID app through Google Play or the App Store.

Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), New York MiD is accepted at TSA security checkpoints at nearly 30 participating airports nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. This allows New Yorkers to easily and securely verify their identity for airport security screening.

The DMV is also actively working with other public and private entities to increase the number of places where New York Mobile ID is accepted. Since its launch, the DMV has been working with businesses across New York City, including car dealerships, bars and restaurants, and financial institutions, to help them learn to accept Mobile ID as proof of identity.

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said, “We knew New Yorkers would quickly embrace Mobile ID, and we’re thrilled with how well it’s been received since it was first released. It shows how many people want to simplify air travel and how many people want additional use cases that we hope to see implemented as quickly as possible.”

New York Mobile ID is designed to protect user privacy and is built to the highest standards for personal identification published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Academy of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ Mobile Driver’s License Implementation Guidelines. The MiD app can only be unlocked using Face ID, TouchID, or a secure six-digit PIN. Personal information found on the MiD is encrypted and only accessible if the Mobile ID holder consents to share it. Information is sent to the verifier via a secure, digital connection, so the user never has to hand over their phone, and usage information, including where, when, and what personal information the user shares, is encrypted and stored only on their personal device. Data about when and where someone uses their MiD is not tracked, stored, or transmitted.

New York residents wishing to use MiD can do so by following a few simple steps:

Download the New York MiD app from the App Store or Google Play.
Register the phone number of the device that will host the Mobile ID. A person’s Mobile ID can only be on one device at a time to help protect their identity.
Take a photo of the front and back of their ID (driving license, ID card or learner’s permit) with their phone camera.
Pose for a selfie. The app checks your photo and ID against information on file with the DMV to make sure you are who you say you are.

Once a user’s information is verified, their MiD becomes active and ready to use wherever it is accepted, including other states and countries.
