Athens man charged after search seized more than 40 weapons, explosives, sheriff says

ATHENS, Tenn. (WVLT) – An Athens man was arrested on several charges Wednesday after methamphetamine, firearms, firearms and explosive devices were seized from his home and storage unit.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones, multiple agencies conducted a search of Daniel Buis’ home in the 200 block of Kenneth Street in Athens and a storage unit connected to it, pursuant to a warrant.

Jones said the search yielded approximately 540 grams of methamphetamine, 41 firearms, four of which were stolen, three improvised explosive devices, more than $40,000 and several drug preparation equipment.

Buis was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Possession of methamphetamine for resale
  • Illegal possession of firearms
  • Possession of an improvised explosive device
  • Possession of a firearm while committing a dangerous crime
  • Maintaining a Drug Dwelling for the Purpose of Using or Storing a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Jones said the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force, Athens Police Department, McMinn County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Sweetwater Police Department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation. Additionally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted at the scene with explosives.
