play

If you are looking forward to cozy, dark and cold winter evenings, here is the date when daylight saving time will end in 2024.

When do we change the clocks in 2024?

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 2:00 a.m.

This will return you to standard time and end daylight saving time (DST).

When the local time reaches 2 a.m., the clocks will be moved back one hour to 1 a.m.

Many devices, such as phones and computers, will automatically switch to standard time, but be careful about non-smart devices, such as microwave ovens and some car radios, as well as clocks that need to be manually changed.

What is daylight saving time for?

The end of daylight saving time means there will be more light in the mornings and it will get dark sooner in the evenings.

Sunrise and sunset on Sunday, November 3 will be one hour earlier than on Saturday, November 2.

When will the shortest day be in 2024?

Sunrise will get later and sunset will get earlier as winter approaches and the days get shorter — the Earth’s tilt keeps the Northern Hemisphere away from the Sun.

The shortest day of the year is the first day of winter, or the winter solstice. In 2024, it falls on Saturday, December 21.

What is the history of daylight saving time?

According to the United States Naval Observatory, the Standard Time Act introduced daylight saving time in America on March 19, 1918, but was quickly repealed in 1919.

Daylight saving time was then operated locally until World War II, when daylight saving time was introduced nationwide from February 9, 1942, to September 30, 1945, to conserve energy for the war effort. After the end of the war, daylight saving time was again operated locally, with its application varying by state and municipality.

This was followed by the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which established standard start and end dates for daylight saving time, but allowed for local exceptions. The Uniform Time Act provided that daylight saving time would begin on the last Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October.

The start and end times have changed many times over the years, including during the “energy crisis” in the 1970s.

Since 2007, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

What is EST, EDT?

After hours in the Eastern Time Zone you may see EST or EDT.

Eastern Time (EDT) is in effect from March to November, during daylight saving time.

The rest of the year, Eastern Standard Time (EST) applies.

For other time zones in the United States such as Central, Mountain, Pacific, etc., the references change to CST, MST, PST, etc.
