Northeast connectivity revolution: Central government infrastructure projects drive regional development – ​​inside details – Infrastructure News

The Central Government has launched numerous infrastructure development projects to significantly increase connectivity in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. These projects cover roads, railways, aviation and waterways sectors with the aim to improve accessibility and support regional development.

Main projects

Road connectivity: The government has made significant progress in road connectivity through initiatives like SARDP-NE and Bharatmala-I, alongside the East-West Corridor. As of May 2024, 78 km of national highways have been constructed in the north-eastern states. Till June 2024, ₹2,859 crore has been spent on further development of these highways.

Air communications: The region has seen a significant increase in air connectivity. By 2023, the number of airports will increase to 17, up from just nine in 2013. The UDAN programme has enabled 194 routes to be serviced by planes and helicopters, boosting tourism, business and making travel easier.

Railway communication: Railway infrastructure is also undergoing a significant upgrade, with 18 projects covering 1,368 km in various stages of development. Of this, 313 km have been commissioned, with a total outlay of ₹40,549 crore till March 2024.

Water communication: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has invested over ₹1,000 crore under the Sagarmala programme to develop 20 operational waterways in the region. Key projects include construction of ferry terminals in Assam to ease transport bottlenecks.

These initiatives, supported by the Ministry of Development of the North-East Region (MDoNER), underline the government’s commitment to transforming the connectivity landscape in the North-East Region.
