Sri Lankan workers’ remittances up 10.3% in first 7 months of 2024

COLOMBO, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Sri Lankan workers remitted 3.71 billion U.S. dollars in the first seven months of 2024, up 10.3 percent compared with the same period last year, according to data from the central bank.

In July, the amount of remittances amounted to USD 566.8 million, compared to USD 541.0 million a year earlier.

Sri Lanka’s foreign sector performance remained positive in the first half of 2024, driven by higher inflows from workers’ remittances and tourism revenues, the central bank said last week.

Workers’ remittances are one of Sri Lanka’s main sources of foreign income.
