EWEC opens registration for Clean Energy Certificates auction in Q3 2024 – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Abu Dhabi (UAE), August 12 (ANI/WAM): Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) today announced that registration for the Abu Dhabi Clean Energy Certificates (CEC) auction in Q3 2024 is open. The auction is scheduled to close on September 13, 2024.

CECs enable Abu Dhabi-based entities to decarbonise their energy consumption and reduce Scope 2 emissions. They enable organisations to track and verify progress towards achieving environmental goals by certifying that electricity comes from a renewable or clean energy source.

EWEC has launched Clean Wind Energy Certificates. They use energy generated from the first utility-scale wind programme in the UAE, secured after EWEC signed a power purchase agreement in Q4 2023 with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar.

The introduction of CEC wind farms enables EWEC to provide organisations with electricity generated from multiple renewable and clean energy sources, further accelerating the UAE’s energy transition and the decarbonisation of key sectors of Abu Dhabi’s economy, including energy, industry, real estate, healthcare, sports and events.

Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, said: “EWEC is at the forefront of accelerating Abu Dhabi’s clean energy transition, in part through our quarterly Clean Energy Certificate auctions. The broad participation in these auctions underscores the growing efforts of entities to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change in line with the UAE’s strategic Net Zero by 2050 initiative.

“By including wind CECs in our auctions, we have expanded the range of renewable and clean energy CECs available, enabling organizations to achieve their sustainability goals using electricity from a variety of sources.”

The CEC certificate is issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) and confirms that the electricity consumed by an Abu Dhabi-based entity comes from a renewable or clean energy source.

CECs, which comply with the internationally recognized standard developed by the International Foundation for Renewable Energy Certificate Standards (I-REC Standard), are the only accredited instrument that confirms ownership of the environmental and economic benefits resulting from the use of clean energy.
