32 cyclists fined for breaking group size rules on the road

SINGAPORE – A total of 32 cyclists were fined for breaking rules on the number of cyclists on the road between July 28 and August 4.

The cyclists were caught during enforcement operations carried out by officers from the Road Traffic Police (TP) and Land Transport Authority (LTA), authorities said in a joint statement.

According to the statement, the limit for a group of cyclists is the length of five bikes. This means a maximum of five cyclists riding in a single file or 10 cyclists riding two abreast on roads with more than one lane.

During the inspection activities, TP and LTA officers also conducted an educational campaign to raise awareness about cycling regulations and guidelines.

Cyclists found guilty of flouting group size rules could face a $150 fine, the statement said.

It added: “This higher fine amount has been increased from 1 January 2022 in order to improve road safety and applies to those breaking other applicable cycling laws.

“This includes failing to stop at red lights, cycling on expressways and cycling parallel to another cyclist on single carriageways or in bus lanes during bus lane operation hours.”

Police reminded cyclists to follow cycling laws and guidelines to ensure safety, as well as the need to keep roads safe for everyone.

Rules and guidelines include riding in single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operating hours, turning on white headlights and red taillights after dark, and wearing a helmet when cycling.

In a Facebook post on August 13, the LTA also said that since the beginning of July, 77 offences committed by careless users of active mobility devices have been detected in places such as Bedok, Robinson Road, Sengkang, Tampines and Woodlands.

These offences – which include personal mobility aids and power-assisted bicycles (PABs) – include riding on non-compliant devices, using devices on an inappropriate roadway and possessing non-compliant PABs.
