Tired of Google? Try These 5 Other Search Engines Instead

On August 5, a federal judge ruled that Google had illegally maintained a monopoly on search, violating antitrust law. While Google remains the biggest name in search, it is not the only player in the game.

There are several other search engines to try that have advantages over Google, such as greater privacy and even a rewards program. You may be familiar with some of these search engines, such as Bing, and you may not have heard of others, such as Startpage, but you may not know much about them.

The main drawback of these alternative search engines is the lack of comprehensive results. This means you may have to look through more results on these other search engines than you would on Google. Some search engines have shown me unhelpful results because of this, but I have found it helpful to be more specific in my search queries.

It is also important to note that even if you use these search engines in Google Chrome, you may not get the full benefits of some of them. Here are five search engines you can try instead of Google.

Bing

Microsoft’s Bing is Google’s closest search competitor, despite the market share gap between them. According to Statcounter, Google grabs about 91% of the global search engine market share, while Bing — which, again, is Google’s closest competitor — has about 4% market share.

Bing has a 2,000-character search box, so you can fill in as much detail as you want — for reference, this article is about 4,200 characters — and it connects to Microsoft’s AI chatbot called Copilot. Bing also has its own loyalty program, so the more you use it, the more points you earn, which you can redeem for gift cards to places like Amazon, Starbucks, Hulu, and more.

Brave is a privacy-focused search engine that blocks trackers and uses Google as a backup option. This means that if a Brave search doesn’t return many results, you can enable the search engine to anonymously check Google for the same query.

Brave also offers other features, such as a VPN, a cryptocurrency wallet, and its own AI assistant called Leo. And Brave said that using the AI is also private and safe. You don’t even have to create or log into an account to use Leo.

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is another privacy-focused search engine that bills itself as the anti-Google. While Google collects and stores data about you to create personalized search results, DuckDuckGo doesn’t track what you do and actively blocks third-party trackers.

Over the past few years, DuckDuckGo has also expanded the range of tools it offers people for free. It now offers tools like App Tracking Protection for Android users, its own VPN — which our experts found to be great for general privacy and streaming — and an AI tool called DuckAssist.

Startpage is a search engine that is also a search aggregator. This means that it works with other companies like Google and Microsoft Bing to provide you with search results.

Despite these partnerships, Startpage said it doesn’t share any of your personal information with its partners and anonymously submits your search requests to them. Startpage also said it doesn’t use tracking cookies and doesn’t look at or access cookies you might have from other sites. Think of Startpage as a way to use Google and Bing without accessing your data.

Exactly, Yahoo still exists. And I like that Yahoo shows you the most important headlines on its home page before you type your query, kind of like the front page of a newspaper. The Yahoo home page also shows you trending topics, local weather, and the most important stories for you.

Yahoo also offers services such as email, as well as finance. Yahoo Finance allows you to enter a portfolio so you can easily track its performance, and it also provides quick access to global market snapshots.
