The great role of women in the development of Qatar

The Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, HE Dr Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, yesterday emphasised Qatar’s great interest in improving the status of women as one of the fundamental pillars in achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030.

HE Dr Al Sulaiti was speaking at the opening session of the Forum on “Investing in Women’s Political Participation” held in Amman and organised by the Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women in the Kingdom of Jordan in partnership with the Coalition of Arab Women Parliamentarians to Combat Violence against Women, the United Nations Agency for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and the National Democratic Institute.

Her Excellency noted that the State of Qatar, in light of the lofty directives of its wise leadership, has adopted clear policies aimed at improving the status of women in all fields, “as the State has provided women with equal opportunities in the fields of education and work, which has enabled them to participate effectively in various sectors of work, in addition to exercising their right to participate in political life.”

She noted the special attention that Qatar attaches to strengthening and protecting the family as the wealth of the nation, as well as to ensuring appropriate conditions for women to participate in public work.

She noted that the country’s approach has seen Qatari women occupying management and administrative positions, and they now make up more than 37 percent of the workforce across the board, especially in key sectors such as education, health, and social work. Qatari women also make up more than 20 percent of entrepreneurs in Qatar.

There is no doubt that women in Qatar are playing an increasingly important role in the development of the country as it continually invests in education, healthcare and economic diversification.

Qatari women have gradually taken on leadership roles in both the public and private sectors. Women hold important positions in government, business and civil society, contributing to policymaking and governance. The number of female entrepreneurs in Qatar is growing, supported by initiatives that provide access to finance, training and networking opportunities. The Qatar Business Incubation Center and other organizations offer resources specifically for women to start and grow their businesses.

Overall, thanks to the country’s leadership, women’s role in Qatar’s development has become multifaceted and continues to grow as the country realizes its vision of a diversified and knowledge-based economy.
