How to improve internet speed

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Are you paying a high monthly fee for internet access, but your connection speeds are frustratingly slow?

You shouldn’t have to settle for poor quality streaming or choppy gaming.

If your internet connection doesn’t offer the expected speed, we’ll help you solve this problem.

Television commercials tell us that everyone needs the fastest Internet at home. One-gigabyte Internet packages can cost more than $100 a month.

The truth is, not everyone needs 1Gb speeds. If you only stream Netflix or Prime on one TV, a 300Mb package will probably be enough. You’ll need multiple devices sharing the same internet connection to reach speeds above 300Mb.

If you’re seeing a constant buffering animation on your screen, there are a few things you might want to check before spending another $20 to $50 on a faster device.

Check your internet connection

First, go to speedtest.org or speedtest.net and measure the speed of your internet connection.

Start by testing with a computer connected directly to your Internet gateway using an Ethernet cable.

The Ethernet connection looks a lot like the old dial-up connections for connecting landlines, but it’s a bit bigger. Your internet installer probably connected the cable to your computer.

If not, you can easily do this by plugging an Ethernet cable into one of the ports on your Internet gateway. The result should be close to the speed you’re paying for.

Then test the speed on a mobile device connected to your Wi-Fi network. Expect slightly slower speeds here.

If you are experiencing buffering on your TV, also check the transmission speed in that room.

Upgrade your router

If the connection speed on your devices is much lower than planned, the cause may be your router.

If it’s outdated, it’s time to invest in a Wi-Fi 6 router.

Place the device in a central location in your home and adjust the antennas for optimal coverage.

Optimize your connection

If your Wi-Fi connection is still slow, try connecting your device directly to your router using an Ethernet cable.

For devices where this is not possible, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to boost the signal. Place the extender halfway between your router and the device that has slow speeds.

The WiFi signal will reach the amplifier, which will repeat the stronger signal.

Consider a grid system

For larger homes or areas with Wi-Fi dead zones, a mesh system can be a game-changing solution.

These systems place multiple transmitters throughout the home, providing consistent coverage.

Connect your devices to the nearest transmitter for best performance. Once connected, it should always connect to the nearest network transmitter.

Please contact your supplier

If you have tried these solutions and your internet speed is still not satisfactory, do not hesitate to contact your internet service provider.

They can help identify any hidden issues and make sure you are getting the service you are paying for.

Remember that fast and reliable internet is essential in today’s connected world.

Don’t let slow speeds stop you from getting the most out of the Internet.

With a little troubleshooting and optimization, you can get the internet speeds you deserve.
