After a long summer break, schools across the UAE will reopen on Monday, August 26. This means a change of routine for both students and parents who will be returning to “school mode” after the holidays.

And while some parents prefer to drop off and pick up their children from school, most use the school bus. There are some safety rules that parents, students, drivers, guardians, and schools should be aware of. While they are not new and have been around for a long time, it doesn’t hurt to refresh your memory.

Here is a simple guide for students, parents, drivers, guardians and schools:

Students and parents

  • Parents should ensure that their child reaches the designated bus stop on time.

  • Parents are required to inform the bus driver and guardian in the event of a child’s delay or absence from school.

  • Students should board their assigned buses.

  • Students must enter and exit the bus in a single line. They should not push or obstruct other students.

  • Students should not bring parents or other people with them onto the school bus.

  • In the event of an accident, students must follow the instructions of the driver and supervisor.

  • Students must remain in their seats on the bus at all times and must not leave their assigned seats without permission from staff.

  • Students are not allowed to leave the bus without the consent of the driver and guardian.

  • Students should not eat or drink on the bus.

  • Students should not look out of the bus window.

Drivers

  • While on the bus, passengers must wear uniform and wear seat belts.

  • Applicants must be fluent in English and Arabic.

  • Buses should pick up and drop off students only at designated stops.

  • They should not overload the bus with more passengers than its capacity.

  • They should not exceed a maximum speed of 80 km/h.

  • There should be a first aid kit on the bus.

  • They should not drive under the influence of alcohol.

  • Smoking on the bus is prohibited.

Schools

  • Schools must ensure that the bus is painted yellow and has the words “School Bus” written on it in English and Arabic.

  • Schools should designate staff to monitor students on the bus.

  • Institutions must provide adequate air conditioning inside the bus.

  • Schools must ensure that every bus has a GPS system.

  • They must monitor school buses using CCTV cameras.

  • Schools must monitor the cleanliness of buses.

  • Institutions must ensure that there are no bars on bus windows.

  • Schools must ensure that buses have adequate emergency exits.

  • Institutions must place a fire extinguisher on buses over 10 metres in length; for buses longer than 10 metres, two fire extinguishers are required.
