Tully Kearney won another gold medal at the Paris Paralympic Games after a convincing victory in the women’s 100m freestyle S5 final.

The Loughborough University swimmer repeated yesterday’s feat by winning the gold medal with an equally impressive performance, defending her title from Tokyo 2020.

Kearney, who holds the world record in the event, accelerated through the turn and finished in 1:15.10. Second place went to Ukrainian Iryna Poida, and third to Italian Monica Bogginoi.

Speaking to Channel 4, Kearney said: “(It’s) amazing. I was a bit nervous about it. Defending my title means everything to me. It was such a late night (yesterday) and an early start, with not much rest in between. It was really hard for all of us who swam last night to keep up the energy.”

“This crowd is amazing. Because I’m the first event tonight, there are a lot more people here than yesterday. They gave me this huge boost.

“I am incredibly grateful to the entire team for helping us get to this point, and to everyone who helped us along the way.”

At the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines track, bronze was taken by Loughborough Lightning Cycling rider Jenny Holl, who co-driven blind teammate Sophie Unwin in the women’s B 1000m time trial.

The duo completed the course in a time of 1:07.879 to secure a well-deserved podium finish in front of a large and noisy British crowd.
