Berkshire: Eton warns of 20% fee increase due to Government’s VAT plan

Eton College will increase its fees by 20% following the Government’s removal of the VAT exemption for independent schools, the college has announced in a letter to parents.

The private boys school, which charges £52,749 a year, said fees would “likely” rise in January, meaning most parents would have to pay around £63,000.

The Berkshire college said it will “make every effort” to provide financial aid to those who cannot afford the increase.

A Government spokesman said ending tax breaks for private schools would help raise money to recruit new teachers, adding: “It is up to individual schools to consider how they will deal with these costs.”
