Lake Region tops MVU in double OT, Lillianna Fournier scores for T-birds | Sport

HIGHGATE – On Friday, August 30, the MVU Thunderbirds hosted the Lake Region Raiders in the Thunderbirds girls soccer season opener at home.

The game was evenly matched in both halves, with Lake Region scoring early in the second overtime to win the match 2-1.

Despite a few close shots on goal, MVU’s attack was quiet in the first half. With 25:02 left in the first half, Lake Region took advantage of a chance to score the first goal of the game. When the game ended, MVU was down 1-0.

Lillianna Fournier (13) scored the only goal for MVU in an overtime loss to North Country on Aug. 30.


MVU’s offense came out strong in the second half, with several additional scoring opportunities. With 14:49 remaining, Lillianna Fournier’s free kick tied the game at one.

MVU goalie Leah Thompson made several spectacular saves late in the second half and in overtime to keep the Thunderbirds in the game. Despite their best efforts, MVU lost 2-1.

After the game, MVU coach Roy Adams spoke of MVU’s efforts: “I thought our freshmen played very well. They are ready to move on to the varsity level, compete and help our team improve as the season progresses. We have some key players this year that will help develop the team. Hopefully, we will get better with each game as the girls get used to playing together.”
