While some of Google’s Gemini features are impressive, its AI strategy is consistently confusing. Charting the full list of available AI features in any product can be difficult, even for experienced users. I’m here to help. Below, I’ve summarized the full range of Gmail AI features, from the newer options powered by Gemini to the original set of machine learning features that are still widely available.

Gemini Gmail AI Features

Gemini is slowly making its way into the Google ecosystem. In Gmail, the language model underpins several intelligent features that streamline email workflows and information absorption.

Gmail Questions and Answers

Gmail Q&A lets users dig into the details of their emails and inboxes with Gemini. The latest Gmail AI feature is available through the Gemini button in the Gmail app and Gmail on the web.

How does it work? Let’s say you’re a live music enthusiast; you can ask to gather details of the concert tickets you’ve collected over the past few months. Gamers can ask the feature to list all the games on sale based on emails from PlayStation, Steam, and other platforms. The information will be gathered from your emails, and Gemini will wrap it up in a neat little arc.

Gmail’s Q&A feature lets Gemini users drill down into the details of their emails and inboxes.

It’s worth noting that this feature is currently limited to searching Gmail inboxes, but will eventually extend to Drive files, making it a particularly powerful tool for finding potential and obscure attachments to include in emails.

Gmail Q&A requires access through a Google One AI Premium plan or Google Workspace with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium subscription.

Gemini at Workspace Labs

Those who don’t subscribe to Google’s premium services but have signed up for the free Gemini in Workspace Labs program will also see a Gemini button in their app and web interface. The feature allows users to perform a variety of tasks in their inbox with prompts, from supercharging inbox search to streamlining email management.

The feature isn’t much different from Gmail’s Q&A feature, and while you can enter your own prompts to better control your inbox, you can use a selection of default suggestions. These include:

  • Users can list of action itemswhich presents a suggested list of tasks to perform in order to respond to or take action on an email.
  • Suggest an answer is also self-explanatory. It uses Gemini intelligence to generate a response to the currently open email.
  • You can also use Gemini for show unread emails from today or get order details for recent purchases.

Summarize this email

While you can shorten your emails with the Gemini prompt, the dedicated Summarize this email button is located at the top of the email. It is more visible in the Gmail app.

Click it, and Gemini will condense the email and any other content that might be in it into short information. It can provide a list of bullet points describing the details in the currently selected email, or reduce a wall of text to a single sentence. This is useful for information-dense or jargon-filled emails.

Help me write

While it uses Gemini’s AI, Help Me Write is a separate AI feature available in the composition window. It focuses primarily on making email writing easier. Users can quickly generate emails using prompts. Example prompts might include “Write a get well soon message for a colleague” or “Write an invitation to a celebration.”

Help Me Write also includes additional editing options that allow you to further refine your draft:

  • Sophisticated: This Gmail AI feature adds extra detail to short email drafts. This is especially useful when the email requires an extended explanation of an idea, a broad description of the problem, or when you want to draw in your audience with a more detailed word picture of your product.
  • Formalize: Unlike Elaborate, Formalize focuses on rewriting your email draft in a more professional manner, with the right tone and wording. This option is useful for writing emails to potential employers when sending a resume, asking a dealer for more details about a car, or anywhere else where formal language is preferred.
  • Polish: This is the newest editing option that lets Gmail write an entire email based on a few very general notes. It differs from Elaborate in that it doesn’t focus on lengthening an email by adding more detail. These little notes don’t have to be coherent, grammatically correct, or make any sense at all. This feature is great for writing emails in the morning, when your brain hasn’t caught up with the thoughts yet.
  • Shorten: If your email draft is too long, Help Me Write can shorten it concisely.
  • You can also view the Help me write prompt Play e-mail if the given project does not meet the requirements or Clean if you want more slick changes.

You can access the Help Me Write feature by clicking or tapping Help me write button (sometimes called Improve my project) when writing an email on the web. You can also press CTRL+H if you’re on the web and have shortcuts turned on.

In the app, you can swipe the Help me write prompt that appears in the composition box or tap the Help me write button.

Other Gmail AI Features

Several smaller machine learning features have been around for years and are still an integral part of the Gmail experience. These include:

  • Nudges: If you don’t respond to an email for several days, a visual reminder will appear in your inbox to remind you to respond.
  • Summary cards: This handy feature displays the most important information from an email at the top of the window. It is commonly used to display travel details, reservations, and package deliveries.
  • Tabbed Inbox: This long-standing feature is underappreciated. It helps sort promotions, spam, social emails, and forum posts into separate sub-inboxes, keeping your main inbox free of chaff.
  • Smart answer was part of Gmail before the end of the decade. While its functionality hasn’t changed much, it’s gained some of Gemini’s powers. It now considers the content and context of an email before recommending a list of possible replies. Those replies are displayed in a series of short quick-reply cards that give the gist of the suggested content. Tapping a card opens a preview of the entire email.
  • Intelligent composition takes into account the email as a whole and refines word and phrase suggestions, helping you quickly complete sentences in your messages.
