The global IT outage in July caused by a flawed CrowdStrike software update prompted many security experts to take a closer look at their security vendors’ practices. SentinelOne’s minimal reliance on the kernel, reduced dependence on cloud connectivity and use of behavioral AI to detect threats offer security advantages over CrowdStrike, CEO Tomer Weingarten said.

The Silicon Valley-based company’s reduced reliance on core operations and cloud connectivity minimizes the risk of system disruption and increases security by reducing the attack surface, Weingarten said. In addition, SentinelOne’s use of behavioral AI embedded in the endpoint enables it to effectively detect threats without frequent updates, which Weingarten compared to competitors such as CrowdStrike (see: CrowdStrike introduces security measures, tries to limit the effects of failures)

“What we do in the kernel is basically passive monitoring plus anti-tempering capabilities,” Weingarten said. “Everything else happens outside the kernel. The reason for that is pretty simple. Any small error that happens at the kernel level causes a blue screen of death. That causes significant disruption to the machine. So of course you want to minimize the amount of operations that happen at that level of computation.”

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Weingarten also spoke about the following:

  • Introducing Purple AI and its benefits for threat detection;
  • PingSafe Acquisition and Its Impact on Cloud Security;
  • Acquisition of the consulting firm Krebs Stamos.

Before founding SentinelOne in January 2013, Weingarten served as vice president of product at Toluna Holdings, which provides real-time customer insights. Previously, Weingarten co-founded Carambola Media, a publisher-focused platform that creates new advertising revenue streams through content formats. He also spent two years at Mckit Systems, a provider of information and knowledge management systems.
