Love Is Blind’s Shaina Hurley Diagnosed with Cancer During Pregnancy

Love is blind alum Shaina Hurley revealed that she was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was three months pregnant.

“I had no symptoms,” Hurley, 34, told People published on Wednesday, September 4. “But then the doctor called me and said the results of the Pap smear were abnormal and that they needed to refer me for a colposcopy.”

A month after the procedure, Hurley said her doctor told her the results “didn’t look good.” She was then diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer. Doctors recommended Hurley undergo cold knife conization to see how far the cancer had spread and to remove as much as possible. At that time, Hurley and her husband, Christos Lardakiswhom she married in July 2022, were expecting their first child.

“The problem is I was pregnant. The cervix is ​​what keeps the pregnancy going. I was about three months along, so I was probably going to lose the baby,” Hurley mused. “I just couldn’t take the risk at that point.”

The hairdresser’s alternative option was to undergo laparoscopic surgery to ensure the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes.

“It hadn’t spread to my lymph nodes, but they still wanted to give me chemotherapy,” Hurley recalled. “I still didn’t have any symptoms, so I refused chemotherapy. It was hard on the doctors because I was their number one patient. And I was a hard patient.”

Hurley later said her doctors suggested she give birth at 32 weeks so they could see if the cancer had changed or spread. Hurley believed the due date was “too early” for her baby and ultimately “pushed it back to 37 1/2 weeks.” She eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy, son Yiorgos David, whom she welcomed in February.

“I don’t think my husband and I ever had any major fights in our marriage,” she recalled. “He wanted a baby, but he also said, ‘Shaina, I don’t want to lose my wife. I want you to be here to raise the baby.’”

Two weeks after giving birth, Hurley suffered a mini-stroke. After recovering from the mini-stroke without any serious side effects, Hurley completed cold knife conization. However, the procedure was unsuccessful as the cancer remained two weeks after the surgery. Hurley underwent conization a second time and was successful.

“Since June, I have finally been cancer-free,” she confessed in an interview.

Although Hurley is currently cancer-free, she still has to undergo check-ups every three months. Hurley and Lardakis are looking to expand their family, but they need to “officially wait a year since her last surgery” to make sure the reality star’s body is fully healed.

“For now, I’m focusing on being a mom and taking it one day at a time,” she said.
