Girl arrested after knife attacks in Courtenay: RCMP

The Comox Valley RCMP says a girl was arrested after police received a report of someone attacking several people with a knife on Wednesday morning.

Mounties were called to the Vancouver Island Regional Library branch in Courtenay around 9 am for reports of the knife attacks taking place in front of the building.

Officers arrived at the scene “within minutes,” according to RCMP, and were able to arrest the suspect, a youth.

Police say the girl will remain in custody until her court appearance, and that there have been no reports of “serious physical injuries” following the attacks.

Meanwhile, police say that Comox Valley RCMP Victim Services are available to anyone affected by the incident.

“The safety and well-being of our community remains our highest priority,” said Insp. Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP, in a statement.

“We understand the concern this event may cause and we want to reassure the public that there is no ongoing threat. “The quick response by members of the public and officers played a critical role in preventing any further harm today,” he said.

Mounties say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the attacks, or who has surveillance, cellphone or dashcam video of the incident, is asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at 250-334-5901.

Tips can also be sent anonymously to Crime Stoppers online or at 1-800-222-8477.
