Piyush Goyal supports border tax on steel

NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday proposed discussions on border adjustment tax create equal playing field For steel sectorwho complains about unfavourable competition from import.
“The border adjustment tax is WTO-compliant mechanismIf all the industries – CII, Ficci, Assocham – take care of it, we can gain traction and introduce it to the country as well,” he said industry meeting.
India has in the past argued that the carbon border tax proposed by the European Union and the UK is inconsistent with international trade rules.
Separately, dealing with Udyog SamagamIn a meeting with state industry ministers, he urged states to implement a “truly rational single-window system” to make it easier for investors to get approvals from government agencies.
Goyal said that approvals for industries in the states should be time-bound and easy. “We are experimenting with a system where people should not have to come to government offices for approvals and compliances,” he was quoted as saying in an official statement. He said the Centre and states can work together across sectors and work towards greater employment opportunities.
