Duke vs. Northwestern Prediction, Picks & Odds 9-6: Week 2

Duke vs. Northwestern Spread Prediction: Week 2

Prince +2.5 (-104) ⭐⭐⭐

Neither team made much of an impression in Week 1. Duke led only 10-0 at halftime against Elon before winning 26-3, and Northwestern eked out a 13-6 victory over Miami (Ohio).

One thing is certain: this will be a defensive duel between David Braun’s Wildcats and Manny Diaz’s Blue Devils.

But the difference is that Duke has some seriously talented players to count on in the running game, while Northwestern ranked 93rd in passing EPA and 112th in rushing EPA last season.

Vanderbilt transfer Mike Wright had a rough start in his debut as Northwestern’s quarterback and now faces a Diaz defense that ranks 26th in SP+.

The running game can beat them in blue and white

While Braun’s defense was strong last year, it was noticeably worse against the run game, ranking 63rd in rushing EPA and allowing the most rushing yards per game in the Big Ten (159.5).

The Blue Devils have two capable running backs in Jaquez Moore and Star Thomas, and they ranked 25th in rushing EPA last season. Texas transfer Maalik Murphy also gives them a potential run threat at the QB position.

With their fast-paced offense, Duke could stay close, if not win — SP+ predicts a 23-17 Blue Devils win. If Duke covers, the $10 bet is a $9.62 profit.

Duke vs Northwestern player prop

Maalik Murphy under 204.5 passing yards (-101) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This bet has less to do with Murphy and more to do with the fact that our best sports betting sites are all over the place when it comes to his passing yards.

FanDuel and BetMGM have Murphy scheduled for 196.5 passing yards at -115 Under, while Cesar has him nearly 10 yards higher and as a better value — a $10 bet at those odds would net him $9.90 in profit.

Although Murphy threw for 291 yards in his Duke debut, it was against an FCS team, and Northwestern’s pass defense is legit. It allowed the 13th fewest passing yards per game among power conference teams last season (192.1).
