Apple Unveils New iPhone 16 Lineup With Future AI Capabilities

Apple on Monday unveiled its latest generation of flagship devices, hinting at the future of artificial intelligence and how it will be integrated into Apple products.

During a nearly two-hour livestream hosted by CEO Tim Cook, Apple introduced customers to its new line of iPhone 16 smartphones, Apple Watch, and other products — all powered by the company’s new artificial intelligence technology.

Apple Intelligence

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple showed off its generative AI technology — called Apple Intelligence — that will help iPhone users with everything from photos and emails to Genmoji, custom emoji that Apple’s AI creates based on descriptions.

Apple Intelligence will also allow you to prioritize emails in your inbox, generate replies, create summaries of audio recordings or notes, and quickly organize and find photos and other valuable information stored on your devices.

In the meantime, expect Siri to also see some personalization improvements, and will now be able to act as your own personal assistant, performing tasks assigned to her, understanding which apps to use to complete those tasks, and offering tips on how to use other new iPhone features.

However, the new Apple Intelligence capabilities won’t be available immediately. The company said it will begin rolling out some AI features in a free beta software update next month — with hopes of expanding throughout the rest of the year and into early 2025.

Apple’s new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models, available with 6.1- or 6.7-inch screens, feature an aluminum body and a vertical dual-camera design.

According to Apple, the new iPhone 16 models, equipped with the new A18 processor, are optimized for faster processing and machine learning, and also offer higher system memory bandwidth than previous iPhone models.

Unlike the iPhone 15, which only had an action button on the Pro models, all iPhone 16 models now have a button in place of the mute switch to allow users to perform multiple functions, such as launching a shortcut or turning on the flashlight.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will start at $799 and $899, respectively, with storage ranging from 128GB to 512GB. They will be offered in five colors: black, white, teal, pink, and ultramarine blue. The devices will be available for pre-order starting Friday, September 13, with an estimated delivery date of September 20.
