David Cachon is always on some off-road adventure

Two-time Trails World Champion and professional mountain bike adventurer David Cachon just gave us an update on his latest and upcoming adventure projects. He always shares incredible footage of riding in exotic locations, but also lots of useful tips on how to improve your riding technique (mostly in Spanish with English subtitles).

Of course he’s been touting the new partnership that will see him move to Niner Bikes after having a few other cycling sponsors in recent years.

But some of his more recent instructional videos, like this one:How to Improve Your Bike Jump‘, I wondered what was up with that big orange fin hanging from the rear fork of his bike. Turns out it was a simple plastic Parrier derailleur cover.

So this Parrier derailleur guard isn’t exactly a new concept. I seem to remember something like that from mountain biking last summer in the 90s. And last summer we covered the flapping Branchy, which had a similar protective purpose. But Parrier’s cheaper solution is also a bit more rugged and durable, and its purpose is more to hide the derailleur and deflect anything in its path, like a boat’s hull parting at sea.

The Parrier derailleur guard is a simple, impact-resistant “dynamic fin” made from high-density polypropylene with internal stiffening structures that hangs under the chainstay and is easily secured using the included 3M VHB adhesive and 3 zip ties.

It’s designed to protect your rear derailleur – one of the most mechanically complex, ride-critical and often expensive individual components on your bike. By gently angling away from the chainstay, the Parrier deflects rocks, sticks and even mud and dirt away from your precious derailleur.

Based in Mallorca, Spain, Parrier sells the derailleur guard direct for just €29 in black, orange, turquoise or olive. It’s 27cm long x 10cm high and flexes 8cm away from the bike – weighing just 85g. They claim it will fit most bikes, from classic trail and all-mountain bikes to gravel, cyclocross, enduro and DH.
