Chipmaker Polymatech expands to Bahrain with $16 million investment – Industry News

Chennai-based multilayer integrated circuit maker Polymatech Electronics has announced a $16.2 million investment to set up a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Bahrain. It plans to invest up to $100 million by 2027.

Polymatech specializes in the design, manufacturing, packaging and assembly of opto-semiconductor integrated circuits used in devices such as LEDs, lasers and photodetectors in industries such as telecommunications, automotive and medical equipment.

“We initially focused on opto-semiconductors, but recently acquired a company in California to expand our capabilities. We are now shifting our focus to power semiconductors and data communications, including 5G and 6G chips,” Eswara Rao Nandam, managing director and CEO of Polymatech Electronics, told FE.

In a virtual speech at the third Voice of the Global South Summit, Sitharaman said recent reports indicate that many Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries are stagnating and some are even regressing.

The Bahrain plant will be built in the Hidd industrial zone and will be called Atri.

It will act as the final assembly point for chips manufactured and packaged in India, strategically catering to the needs of West Asia and North Africa, with a focus on the horticultural and medical electronics industries.

Polymatech’s factory in Tamil Nadu currently produces 2 billion chips a year, with plans to expand to 5 billion by the end of 2024.
