A Look at Sales

Last week, PRINTING United Expo in Las Vegas was a success, with 817 exhibitors occupying an incredible 386,850 square feet of space across two halls. The show was electrifying, with attendees from around the world coming to experience the latest in the printing industry, checking out new equipment, software, supplies, and everything in between. Not to mention a rich array of educational and networking opportunities throughout the three days.

One way to measure the true success of a trade show is to look at the sales made at the show floor. While this is not an exhaustive list by any means, it is always good to see who is buying, what they are focused on at the Expo, and how it will help them grow their business in the years to come.

RISO was one exhibitor that had a huge success. Andre D’Urbano, the company’s vice president of sales, noted that RISO actually had a promotion to encourage people to stop by the booth and make a purchase—this year, he noted, the Show Special was free ink cartridges, the quantity of which varied depending on the model purchased. And it paid off. This year, the company signed deals at the show for:

  • 2 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer T2200 Valezu (320 views per hour device)

  • 9 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer T1200 Valezu (device 160 views per hour)

  • 11 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer GL9730 (device 160 views per hour)

  • 18 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer GL7430 (device 140 views per hour)

  • 11 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer FT5230 (device 120 views per hour)

  • 5 RISO Sheetfed Inkjet Printer FT5000 ((Device 108 views per hour)

  • 28 RISO Digital Duplicator (includes MH9450 and MF9450)

As D’Urbano notes, that was a total of 84 deals signed at the show, and he expects most of them to close in the coming weeks as due diligence is completed. Overall, he noted, it was a busy show with a lot of traffic at the booth, and the numbers certainly don’t lie.

Another company that enjoyed great success at the show was Xerox. Although she did not provide specific numbers, Lisa Graham, business communications manager for Xerox Global Marketing, noted, “The Xerox team is pleased with the positive feedback and customer reception at this year’s PRINTING United. In addition to interest in our newest entry-level color production press, the Xerox PrimeLink C9200 Series Production Color Press, our Iridesse and Versant 280 presses and FreeFlow workflow automation software suite attracted significant attention from customers and attendees. We have held follow-up customer meetings to discuss how Xerox’s offerings and our comprehensive production ecosystem can help increase productivity and improve customer profitability. Following these significant conversations, we look forward to continuing our relationships with our existing customers while providing essential support and information to potential customers interested in adopting Xerox printing. In addition to the sales made during the event, we expect to close numerous additional contracts for the various solutions presented at our stand as a result of our participation in the fair.”

One of EFI’s biggest successes at the show was the sale of the company’s Q5r. The press was purchased by Taylor Visual Impressions and will help the company expand into the New York metro area, notes Holly O’Rourke, EFI’s global director of corporate communications.

Raquel Caruso, Marketing Manager at Muller Martini, shared one of the company’s greatest successes, noting, “Muller Martini is pleased to announce the sale of our Prinova Digital Saddle Stitcher to BOPI, a leading print service provider with over 75 years of experience based in Bloomington, Illinois. This pivotal decision to invest in our Prinova Digital Saddle Stitching technology provides ease of use, flexibility and is the ideal solution to provide a wide range of options for both offset and complex digital finishing needs that will take BOPI into the future. BOPI made the pivotal decision to invest in Muller Martini to replace aging technology. Prinova provides a breath of fresh air with ease of use and expandability for the highest level of digital finishing.”

Eric Mills of JPS Books and Logistics proved that it wasn’t just about the “big iron” sold at the show. He signed a contract with Tony Tarpey, Presswise, for the company’s Web-to-print and estimating software package. Tarpey noted, “In the age of the Internet and online demonstrations, you can see the value of shows like PRINTING United, where we can meet customers and prospects face to face and make meaningful connections. Customers like to know exactly who they’re doing business with.”

Other products sold at the fair included:

  • SAATI sold signs on several computer screens they had at their booth.
  • DocumentDataSolutions (DDS) has sold its iDataPrint solution to Specialty Print Communications (SPC) of Niles, Illinois.
  • Durst sold the TAU RSC E to iGraphics, based in Grass Valley, California.
  • Agfa has sold the Anapurna Ciervo H3200 press to 12k Digital Solutions, based in Miami, Florida.
  • TheMagicTouch sold the equipment immediately after the presentation in Clothes list Live theatre, demonstrating the power of education on stage.
  • PLASTGrommet sold several of its banner finishing systems at the show, including to Buildasign of Austin, Texas, and Evolving Edge Graphics of Urbandale, Iowa.
  • Fujifilm has sold its Revoria Press PC1120 press to Leader Graphics of Erie, Pennsylvania.
  • DigiTech sold its UV flatbed printer to Yotta Sky, which has offices in Miami and Orlando, Florida, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and most recently in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • ROQ had great success promoting the show, with Marketing Director Merrill Capps noting that while they couldn’t provide exact numbers, “the booth had incredible traffic and we helped several established and new #PressOnward partners, and we really enjoyed connecting with everyone at the show! We’re looking forward to next year’s show.”

Of course, with such a large show spanning two different halls in the Las Vegas Convention Center, it would be impossible to single out all the successes from this year’s event. But it’s great to see so many companies taking advantage of this opportunity to fully explore all the technologies on display and make strategic investments that will help them grow their business. There’s no one perfect investment, strategy, or growth path that works for every company. That’s why events like PRINTING United Expo are so inspiring—seeing the vast array of options and the countless ways people are using them to push the boundaries of printing is one of the best parts of The Expo.
