ICA Board appoints Suncorp CEO Steve Johnston as Chairman

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has appointed Steve Johnston, CEO and Managing Director of Suncorp, as Chair of the ICA Board, with effect from 1 January 2025.

Johnston joined the ICA Board as a Director in August 2021 and replaces Nick Hawkins, Managing Director and CEO of IAG, who served as Chair of the ICA Board for the past two years.

At the last meeting, the board decided to change the position of president from president to chairman.

Hawkins commented: “I would like to thank the Insurance Council of Australia for their support during my term as CEO. Over the past two years, the insurance industry and its customers have faced many challenges, including the most costly floods in Australia.

“Throughout this time, the industry has worked hard to adapt and improve to ensure our customers in communities across Australia have the resilience and support they need. I am confident that the Board is in good hands with Steve leading the way into 2025 and I congratulate him on his appointment as Chairman.”

Johnston concluded: “I would like to express my gratitude to Nick Hawkins for his leadership, dedication and hard work over the past two years as Chair of the ICA Board.

“Moving forward, I am confident that, together with my board colleagues, ICA CEO Andrew Hall and the ICA team, we can continue to build strong partnerships with governments, communities and regulators to address the protection gap and ensure the strength and sustainability of our sector for the benefit of our customers and communities.”
