Amendment 3: Legalization of abortion – ABC17NEWS

COLUMBIA, MO (KMIZ)

Amendment 3 is probably the most high-profile question on the ballot this year. It seeks to repeal Missouri’s nearly total abortion ban.

The amendment narrowly survived a legal challenge, as the Missouri Supreme Court placed it on the ballot just hours before the certification deadline.

Restoring legal protections for abortion and other reproductive health care has been a priority for civil rights advocates in the two years since Roe vs. Wade was overturned. Missouri was one of the first states to ban abortion after that decision.

Critics say the amendment is too broad.

The language of fair voting

AND “Yes” The ballot measure establishes a constitutional right to make decisions about reproductive health care, including abortion and contraception, with any government interference with that right being void; repeals Missouri’s ban on abortion; allows for the regulation of reproductive health care to improve or maintain the health of the patient; requires that the government not discriminate in government programs, funding, or other activities against persons providing or obtaining reproductive health care; and allows for the restriction or prohibition of abortion after the fetus is viable in vitro, except when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman.

AND “NO” vote would uphold Missouri’s statutory abortion ban.

If passed, the bill could reduce local taxes, but its impact on state taxes is unknown.
