AUC approves Westbridge’s Dolcy Solar + Energy Storage

Westbridge Renewable Energy subsidiary Dolcy Solar has received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to develop the 300 MWac Dolcy Solar + Energy Storage project in Canada.

The project includes a solar power plant with a capacity of up to 300 MWac (megawatts of alternating current) connected to battery energy storage systems (BESS) capable of storing up to 200 megawatt-hours (MWh).

It will include a substation that will support the integration and distribution of energy generated by the facility.

Approval is subject to conditions set out in the Water and Electricity Act and the Alberta Utilities Commission Act.

Westbridge expects to submit its merger application to the AUC in the first quarter of 2025.

The Dolcy Solar project is the company’s third initiative in Alberta to receive AUC approval.

Westbridge Renewable Energy Corporation President and COO Maggie McKenna said, “We are pleased to announce that the AUC has approved our Dolcy project, which is expected to provide electricity to more than 72,000 homes in Alberta.

“This is another significant achievement for Westbridge and supports our commitment to the energy transition to provide Albertans with reliable, affordable, renewable energy.

“This approval represents a positive step forward for solar energy in the region, recognizing the benefits of combined land use through agrivoltaics to provide an attractive combination of clean energy, agricultural productivity and job creation.”

In June 2023, Westbridge Renewable subsidiary Sunnynook Solar Energy received approval to build the 270 MW Sunnynook solar PV and storage project in Alberta.

Sunnynook has received AUC approval to develop the project, which includes a 200 MWh BESS.

Westbridge acquired the Sunnynook project in December 2021. It is located in Special Area 2, 53 km from Hanna, Alberta, and covers 985 acres.
