New Executive Director of ND Department of Mineral Resources Addresses Annual Meeting of ND Petroleum Council

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KUMV) – North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Director Nathan Anderson spoke publicly for the first time during a panel at the annual meeting of the North Dakota Petroleum Council held Wednesday.

Anderson was hired in August to replace Lynn Helms. He worked in the private sector in Colorado but is originally from North Dakota. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from NDSU and has 25 years of industry experience. Anderson said he is eager to take on the new position in North Dakota.

“What an incredible team (former DMR executive Lynn Helms) has put together! I can’t wait to get back to my home state and bring my family back here,” Anderson said.

He said he spent the first few days meeting with the DMR team and introducing himself. Anderson said he will work with everyone to build a foundation of trust and communication among his employees.

“Everyone has my word that I will do everything in my power to communicate effectively and be an authentic and honest person,” Anderson said.

Petroleum Council president Ron Ness said he was the right person for the job.

“He understands what the job is in terms of regulation, but also finding and making sure we’re using this resource in North Dakota. I think the Industrial Commission made the right choice,” Ness said.

Anderson’s biggest challenge will be navigating the legislative session that begins in January, which he said will be a learning experience.

“I have a lot to learn about this. Luckily, through my meetings with the team, we have an amazing staff, and (assistant director) Mark Borher will be by my side helping me,” Anderson said.

Anderson said he is in the process of moving his family to Bismarck.
