IRFA asks Congress to prioritize E15 repair in early 2025

The executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said he hopes a federal solution enabling year-round production of E15 fuel will be prioritized in early 2025.

Monte Shaw says the Brownfield bill is stalled in Congress. “It’s being blocked by one senator who has a refinery in his backyard and just won’t let it go. That senator is retiring at the end of this year. Hopefully, this will provide an opportunity to solve this problem once and for all across the country.”

He says the annual summer waiver from the US EPA is not sustainable in the long term. “It’s not something they can just decide to do. If the data doesn’t support it and the administration tries to do it, they would probably be very vulnerable to a lawsuit. So thinking that’s going to happen year after year is not the way to go.”

Shaw says some fuel retailers have supported the change in legislation.
