Colorado’s Deion Sanders unconcerned about controversial prediction ahead of Baylor game

BOULDER, Colorado – Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders is known for not shying away from controversy, but a recent media scandal has left some football enthusiasts scratching their heads.

During a press conference ahead of Colorado’s game against the Baylor Bears on Saturday, Sanders stated that he was not concerned about the rain and its impact on the game, even pointing to his app to confirm that.

A media representative asked the second-year coach if his preparation for the game had changed due to the expected rain, to which Sanders replied, “We got rain? What’s the forecast?”

The former eight-time Pro Bowl receiver then opened his app and announced that there was no mention of heavy rainfall on his phone Saturday night.

“Whose services are you using?” Sanders asked a media representative about the forecast.

“I found out this morning from the local meteorologist,” said the sports journalist.

“There you have it… I’m one of those good meteorologists… 30% is 70% it won’t rain. Let’s do an exercise that says it won’t rain,” Sanders said.

WHAT DOES THE PERCENTAGE RAIN CHANCE MEAN IN THE FOX WEATHER APP?

The back-and-forth raised questions about who was right and whether the weather would impact the Big 12 Conference game.

According to the National Weather Service office that serves the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area, several forecast models are pointing to rain in the area, but it is still unknown whether that will impact the game.

“Euro is still headed for significant precipitation, but the latest Canadian and GFS calculations have shifted it a bit more to the south,” the NWS meteorologist said.

The bureau said it does not plan to send a meteorologist to the game, which may indicate the lightning threat from the storm system in the Boulder area will not be significant.

“The bottom line is… There is significant uncertainty, but there is a very high chance (70-80% chance) of precipitation this weekend. We have a high chance (50-60%) of moderate precipitation and a low chance (~20% chance) of light precipitation,” NWS forecasters said.

2024 NFL SEASON SCHEDULE: EXTREME WEATHER CHANGES THAT WILL AFFECT GAMES

“You have to understand that,” Sanders said. “When we have a group of guys who know football, we’re going to do everything we can to put our guys in the best situation possible. That could be after practice, that could be before practice. But we don’t want to take time out of practice to do a drill based on something that might not happen.”

According to the FOX Forecast Center, fans should prepare for wet weather regardless of the weather in case there are scattered showers at Folsom Field on Saturday evening.

Rain outside of thunderstorms typically does not lead to suspension or cancellation of play. However, when a thunderstorm causes lightning, play is suspended due to the risk to the safety of players, staff, and fans.
