BITS Pilani alumni couple pledges ₹8.40 crore for institutional development

BITS Pilani received a funding of $1 million ( 8.40 crore) in contributions from a pair of alumni, taking the total commitment to the fund to over $18 million.

These funds will enable modernisation of laboratories, enhancement of infrastructure, implementation of research initiatives and improvement of the overall student education across all BITS Pilani campuses.

The project involved Ravinder Kumar Bhat (born 1978) and Sumita Desarkar (born 1981), serial entrepreneurs based in the United Arab Emirates. 8.40 crore under the Sumita Desarkar and Ravinder K. Bhat Fund for Institutional Development.

The donation is part of the proposed $100 million BITS Pilani Trust Fund, which aims to stimulate institutional development and support innovation, BITS Pilani said.

During their 20-year stay in the UAE, they founded companies in various sectors, including construction, commodities trading, infrastructure, oil and gas equipment, and event management.

Ms. Desarkar and Mr. Bhat shared, “BITS Pilani has profoundly shaped our personal and professional journeys not only through the world-class educators and the strong work ethic instilled, but also through the network we have developed and continue to maintain strongly. We are honored to be able to give back to the institute that has laid the foundation for our careers and growth, with the hope that this contribution will continue the legacy of excellence and create new opportunities for generations to come.”

“We are deeply grateful for this support. This fund will go a long way in strengthening our academic and infrastructural development efforts, taking the institute to new horizons,” said Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani.

“This contribution is a testament to the enduring bond between our alumni and the institute and their love for the institution. The impact of Sumita and Ravinder’s generosity will be felt for years to come,” said Prof. Arya Kumar, Dean of Alumni Relations.

As per a press release, the funds will enable modernisation of laboratories, enhancement of infrastructure, implementation of research initiatives and improvement of the overall student education across all BITS Pilani campuses.
