RI to have 90 MW of additional geothermal power by year-end – Economy

hree geothermal power plants are set to begin operating in the country by the end of this year, adding 90 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity to the local renewable electricity supply.

Eniya Listiani Dewi, director general of renewables at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, said the three projects were the Salak Binary in West Java, Blawan Ijen Unit 1 in East Java and Sorik Marapi Unit 5 in North Sumatra, with capacities of 15 MW, 34 MW and 40 MW, respectively.

“We’ve seen increasing geothermal adoption in the last 10 years. We hope it will continue to increase more significantly,” Eniya said on the sidelines of the 10^th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention and Exhibition (IIGCE) in Jakarta on Wednesday.

This year, the ministry expects geothermal developers will realize US$664 million of investment, a figure that would bring the total realized geothermal investment in the last decade to $5.4 billion.

“We need a lot of energy resources to achieve net zero, which will come mostly from geothermal and hydropower. “We have an abundance of hydropower sources,” she added.

Indonesia is estimated to have some 24 GW of potential geothermal power, but only 2.6 GW, or 11 percent, of that has been installed, energy ministry data shows.
